CDC Lifts Ban on Cruises
Published Saturday, October 31st 2020 - Updated Saturday, October 31st 2020EXCITING NEWS, CRUISES TO BEGIN SAILING SOON!
The CDC has finally lifted the no-sail order and has established a phased resumption of cruising from the US! In making their decision, the CDC considered the recommendations from the Healthy Sail Panel which was put together by The Royal Caribbean Group and Norwegian Cruise Lines Holdings (https://www.getreadytocruise.com/BlogPosts/view/16268) as well as recommendations from Carnival Corporation and MSC Cruises which has been sailing safely and successfully in Europe since August.
This new measured approach to sailing will include new protocols and changes including (but not limited to):
- Frequent testing of all guests and crew
- Reduced passenger capacity
- Changes to all onboard venues (including entertainment and dining venues) to allow for social distancing
- Mask requirement
- Upgraded medical facilities to accommodate testing and treatment if needed
- Clearly defined evacuation procedures in the event of an outbreak
In an additional effort to make sure that cruising is safe for both guests and crew, it's expected that ships will limit passengers to their own sanctioned shore excursions in order to keep everyone safe and inside “the bubble.” All health and safety policies will be reviewed frequently by both the CDC and the cruise lines and managed accordingly.
Before sailing with guests, the cruise lines will be required to sail several test voyages make sure that everything is implemented correctly (sign me up!) and in fact many have already started calling crew back to work and have begun retrofitting ships to accommodate the new protocols. We don't yet have a date for cruising to resume but it is expected to be either late this year or early next year!
