SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (November 4, 2008) – A spray of ruby-colored water from two escorting fireboats welcomed Ruby Princess, the newest ship in thePrincess Cruises fleet, into Fort Lauderdale today. The ship arrived to begin several days of launch festivities with a distinctly romantic theme, the highlight of which will be its November 6 naming by America’s reigning reality couple, Trista and Ryan Sutter of The Bachelorette in honor of their fifth wedding anniversary. In an industry first, a couple will also be married during the naming ceremony, with Love Boat captain Gavin MacLeod giving away the bride, and Trista and Ryan serving as wedding attendants.
The romantic events continue as Princess hosts a “Ruby Red Tie” gala to celebrate the naming of its new ship, followed by a two-night preview cruise for hundreds of VIP guests. During the sailing, the ship will host an array of “ruby” and romance-themed activities, including a massive renewal of vows for all couples on November 7. Ruby Princess returns to Port Everglades on November 8 for its inaugural seven-day sailing to the Western Caribbean.

The 3,080-passenger Ruby Princess includes a dramatic piazza-style atrium featuring small-bite eateries and an ever-changing line-up of street performers. Passengers will also enjoy Princess' other array of dining venues including the signature Sabatini's Italian restaurant and the Crown Grill steak house, plus a relaxing oasis just for adults called The Sanctuary. The new ship will also offer the many other innovations that define the Princess experience, including the popular Movies Under the Stars poolside movie screen, Personal Choice Dining featuring traditional or Anytime seating, multiple entertainment venues, a relaxing Asian-style Lotus Spa with fitness center, an extensive children and teen's center, and a wedding chapel.

NCL, New Ships

April 24, 2008: Today at Aker Yards in France, NCL Corporation revealed the cruise industry's most innovative living space at sea - New Wave Staterooms by NCL. Designed for its next generation of Freestyle Cruising ships, F3, the New Wave standard, New Wave balcony and New Wave deluxe staterooms represent a giant leap forward in cruise ship accommodations with a completely fresh take on bathroom design, contemporary curved architecture and open living space.

"From the introduction of the first Caribbean cruise more than 41 years ago to the launch of Freestyle Cruising in 2000 and beyond, NCL has always blazed a trail of innovation," said Colin Veitch, NCL's president and CEO. "We have thrown away the rule book with the design of F3 and today are revealing the very first element with our New Wave staterooms. Gone are the regimented typical designs and in place are sleek staterooms that are totally outside the box, designed for the needs of tomorrow's guests."

The New Wave staterooms most distinctive design element is its curved walls and lines creating a modern and chic experience. NCL has maximized the living space with a bathroom that is completely unique with a separate shower stall, separate water closet and a modern vanity top sink. The staterooms feature a sophisticated earth-tone palette accented with a splash of color and rich, dark wood. Concealed contour LED lighting and back-lit domed ceilings set a relaxing vibe.

All the amenities and comforts of NCL's Freestyle 2.0 enhancements are included with upgraded bedding, linens and towels, Euro pillows, Elemis bathroom products and MP3 connectivity upon request. Balcony and deluxe staterooms have bathrobes, a customized fruit menu, a fresh-baked cookie at turn down on the last night of cruise, an escort to the stateroom on embarkation day, priority restaurant reservation and reception hotlines and special color keycard for ship-wide recognition.

"Today's announcement is just the first chapter in a series of innovations we will be revealing about our new F3 ships leading up to their launch in 2010," Veitch said. "These ships will further deconstruct the traditional cruise ship experience with innovations in design, accommodations, luxury and entertainment to create a cutting-edge resort vacation experience unlike any other at sea."

Further design details of the New Wave staterooms include:

The two 150,000-ton F3 ships will each total 4,200 passenger berths, representing the largest ships in NCL's fleet. The new ship design will offer 60 percent more guest space than NCL's largest ships to date, which will be used to provide guests an even wider range of on-board activities, amenities and stateroom options. The ships' cabin mix will be the richest of any NCL ship with 100 percent of outside staterooms featuring private balconies. In total, each ship will have 1,415 balcony staterooms.

More details about the F3 ships including other innovative accommodations, public spaces, dining, entertainment/nightlife, cutting-edge technology and casino will be announced leading up to the launch of the first F3 ship in 2010.

Seabourn Shares Details of New Ships
4/15/2008 4:57:30 PM Link |  | Add comment
New Itineraries, New Ships, Seabourn
The Yachts of Seabourn, which is building intimate, yacht-like vessels, has shared more details of the new ships, starting with the all-suite Seabourn Odyssey due out in June 2009. Seabourn Odyssey and the two other new vessels on order will each carry 450 guests at double occupancy -- compared to 750 guests on other luxury ships and 6,400 on the industry's newest mega-ship in the works. "I think there is a line between a small-ship and a large-ship experience," said Seabourn president and CEO Pamela Conover. "We choose not to cross that line because we are committed to providing the sort of individualized experience that is the reason Seabourn guests choose to travel with us. We are building for a particular sort of very discerning traveler who understands the equation between intimacy and luxury."

The new ships will provide among the highest ratios of space per guest in the industry, and will include amenities such as an 11,500-square-foot indoor/outdoor spa, spread over two decks. Ninety percent of the ship's guest accommodations will have private verandas, and the ships will feature four alternative dining venues. But the new Seabourn yachts are designed to encourage a relaxed, sociable lifestyle. Lounges are scaled for informal gathering and conversation, which are also encouraged by Seabourn's all-inclusive fares, which provide complimentary beverages including wines and spirits throughout the cruise. Their intimate size will allow them to call at ports and harbors where larger ships cannot follow.

Seabourn Odyssey will begin its maiden season in the Eastern Mediterranean and Black Seas, visiting marquee ports such as Venice, Dubrovnik, Istanbul and Yalta, as well as newly discovered gems including Batumi, Georgia; Sochi, Russia; and the Greek Isles of Khyos and Symi. Odyssey anchor in secluded bays such as Triluke Bay on Croatia's Dalmatian Coast and the Greek island of Amorgos to deploy its water sports marina. With early-booking savings of up to 35 percent, fares for Seabourn Odyssey voyages start from $4,002 per person, based on double occupancy. Other Seabourn yacht vacations start from $2,398 per person double. For more information, call 866-912-7245
Royal Caribbean Unveils Details About Project Genesis Ship

New Service, New Ships, News, Royal Caribbean

MIAMI, April 15, 2008 – In its latest evolution in cruise ship design, Royal Caribbean International’s Project Genesis will bring the best of the land to sea with Central Park, a revolutionary design in which the center of the ship opens to the sky and features lush, tropical grounds spanning the length of a football field. An exquisite public gathering place featuring serene pathways, seasonal flower gardens and canopy trees, Central Park will provide cruisers with more choices in a unique outdoor space. One of the ship’s most ground-breaking spaces, this new concept is the first of seven neighborhoods to be unveiled on Project Genesis. Each neighborhood will provide vacationers with the opportunity to seek out relevant experiences in various locales based on their personal style, preference or mood.

Elegant and lively, Central Park’s central piazza will be the ship’s “town square” which evolves from a tranquil and peaceful atmosphere during the day to a gathering space for alfresco dining and entertainment in the evening, where guests will enjoy concerts and street performances. The neighborhood is lined with balcony staterooms rising six decks high with views of the Park below and the sky above.

Surrounding this social space will be an array of restaurants, with choices ranging from fine dining to casual chic. Guests will have the option of an elegant dinner at the new 150 Central Park or a picnic lunch from the more casual Central Park Café, where they can sit outdoors and people-watch. Other dining choices will include: Giovanni’sTable, an Italian restaurant; Vintages wine bar; and Royal Caribbean’s signature Chops Grille steakhouse. Several bars will be scattered throughout the Park, including the Canopy Bar, located at one of two impressive glass-domed canopies, and the unique Rising Tide bar - the first moving bar at sea. Truly an engineering feat, Rising Tide will span three decks and allow cruisers to enjoy a cocktail as they slowly ascend into Central Park and then descend back into the public spaces below. Central Park also will have stylish boutique shops, showcasing a selection of upscale merchandise.

“Building such a large vessel allowed us to add even more of the choices and amenities that our guests value and Central Park is a dramatic addition to our already extensive array of exciting features,” said Richard D. Fain,Chairman & CEO, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. “Central Park is the first of many dynamic neighborhoods on Project Genesis which will enable each guest to find his or her own space and activity.”

“Our brand identity is founded in innovation and on delivering the best cruise vacation through ‘WOW’ experiences,” stated Adam Goldstein, President & CEO, Royal Caribbean International. “Central Park is a true evolution of cruise ship design and allows us to provide our guests with not only a more varied selection of balcony accommodations, but also a stunning public venue that will be a central element of the ship, both during the day and atnight.”

Central Park Fast Facts

  • Central Park is located on Deck 8 of the ship, with dimensions of 62 feet (19 meters) wide and 328 feet (100meters) long. The sophisticated neighborhood will include 334 staterooms overlooking the Park, 254 with balconies.
  • Central Park will be landscaped with tropical foliage, including seasonal flowers, shrubs and trees. Drawing on the concept of unexpected surprises and intrigue, garden spaces throughout the Park will sprout from charming pathways. Drifts of Calla Lilies among Giant Elephant Ears, Red Ginger, Rabbit Foot Ferns and Zebra Calathea are some of the plant life guests will discover. Trees, some eventually reaching more than two-and-ahalf decks tall, include Black Olive, Cuban Laurel, Cherry of the Rio Grande, and Painted and Golden Bamboo. Surprises in the Park include quiet reading corners; a Chess Garden with large-scale pieces; the Pergola Garden,an interpretive garden featuring vegetation from a host of Caribbean locales; and a Sculpture garden, highlighting work by international artists. Irrigation and drainage systems will be incorporated, along with micro-climate control techniques.
  • An on-site horticulturist will provide educational classes for guests seeking to learn more about flora.

  •  The Crystal Canopies, two impressive arched-glass domes, one with a bar, will be a focal point of Central Park and provide sunlight into the ship’s inner public spaces.

• Restaurants and dining options in the Central Park neighborhood include:

  •  150 Central Park – The most exclusive dining venue on the ship, 150 Central Park combines leading edge cuisine with leading-edge design. An observation window into the kitchen of this stylish restaurant will give Central Park passersby the opportunity to observe the executive chef in action. Open for dinner.

  • Chops Grille – Continuing the tradition, Royal Caribbean’s popular signature steakhouse will offer premium cut, quality meats in an upscale, contemporary setting. Open for dinner.

Rustic with a contemporary flair, dishes are served family style in an indoor and outdoor setting to provide an alfresco experience in Central Park. Open for lunch and dinner.

Central Park will feature upscale retail boutiques for discerning travelers, including specialty outlets such as The Parkside Gallery, showcasing original artwork for purchase, and Picture This, a portrait studio.

When she launches in late 2009, Project Genesis will be the largest and most revolutionary cruise ship in the world. An architectural marvel at sea, she will span 16 decks, encompass 220,000 GRT, carry 5,400 guests, and feature 2,700 staterooms. The ship will sail from her home port in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Dining Aboard Celebrity's Solstice

Celebrity Cruises, New Service, New Ships
Ten of 2008's hottest new restaurants will open this fall, but diners won't need special connections to book a table. In fact, they won't even need directions, since the GPS coordinates will change daily. That's because the 10 restaurants are all on one of the world's most eagerly awaited new cruise ships: Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Solstice.

"The dining experience has always been central to our guests' cruise experience, and on Celebrity Solstice, we'll present the extraordinary service the brand is known for, in venues designed to perfectly complement the spectacular cuisine," said Celebrity's President and CEO Dan Hanrahan. "The larger size of Celebrity Solstice allows us to offer more options for our guests, with menus created by some of the best talent in the business."

"Celebrity has long been recognized as a leader in the culinary arena, and we're clearly taking it to the next level with Celebrity Solstice," said Richard D. Fain, Chairman and CEO of Celebrity's parent company, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. "In addition to outstanding cuisine, we believe the brand also will be recognized for some of the most impressive design work in the industry when Celebrity Solstice sets sail."

Celebrity partnered with some of the world's best designers in the hospitality business to create the restaurants onboard Celebrity Solstice; among them, preeminent restaurant and hotel designer Adam Tihany, who created such lauded restaurants as Per Se, Jean Georges, Le Cirque, The Sea Grill and Osteria del Circo in New York; Aureole, Bouchon and Seablue in Las Vegas; and Monte's and the chic Mandarin Bar at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park in London.

In his first foray into design onboard a cruise ship, Tihany created Celebrity Solstice's dramatic, two-level Grand Epernay dining room; the classic steakhouse, "Tuscan Grille," and the stylishly casual "Oceanview Café and Grill" on the ship's lido deck. His sophisticated, often groundbreaking design is evident on Celebrity Solstice in the Grand Epernay's two-story wine tower, to the Napa-meets-Old-World-Italy ambience in the ship's inviting Tuscan Grille. Driving the creation of the tantalizing menus for each venue are Celebrity's Vice President of Food & Beverage Jacques Van Staden, in conjunction with Celebrity's culinary consultant Blau & Associates. Van Staden was previously one of the top chefs and restaurateurs in Washington, D.C. and Las Vegas. Blau & Associates is credited with shaping the dining experience at high profile destinations such as the Bellagio and Wynn Resort and Casino, and developing the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino's Simon kitchen + bar, named one of the best new restaurants in America in 2003 by Esquire magazine.

Together with Celebrity's highly experienced Food and Beverage team at its Miami headquarters and across the fleet, Van Staden and the Blau & Associates team have carefully created menus for each restaurant onboard Celebrity Solstice based on a pairing of thorough studies of guests' culinary preferences and the latest dining trends from around the world. The team will take their creations into test kitchens later this month to ensure each selection meets Celebrity's discerning guests' tastes.

A "Taste" of Celebrity Solstice's Dining Venues:

The Grand Epernay
Old Hollywood glamour meets stunning contemporary design in this refined, sweeping main dining room created by Adam Tihany, highlighted by a distinctive, dramatic, two-story glass wine tower. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, evening entrée options include peppered bison filet with red onion preserve; smoked filet with lentil stew, sultana caper and beef jus; and taro-crusted salmon filet with glazed Brussels sprouts, turnip hash and apple cider sauce. A champagne collection from the region inspiring the venue's name includes Perrier Jouet Grand Brut, Moet & Chandon Dom Perignon, Heidsieck and Monopole, Champagne Pol Roger, and Louis Roederer Cristal.

Tuscan Grille
The Old World charm of Italy is the inspiration behind this Tihany-designed specialty venue, where guests enter through an archway reminiscent of a fine Napa Valley wine cellar. There, diners can enjoy Caesar salads prepared tableside, antipasti bar, Kobe beef, and a variety of steaks, all paired with a robust list of fine Italian wines. Silk Harvest
Exotic Asia is the theme of this contemporary, casual specialty restaurant designed by RTKL. The menu serves up a fusion of hot and cold, spicy and mild Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese, Chinese and Indian selections, while the specially-selected libations include a variety of sakes, Asian-influenced martinis and beers, and cocktails created with ginger root and acai berries.

Blu
"Clean cuisine" is served in this soothing specialty venue designed by Celebrity's own Newbuilding and Design team. A venue exclusively for guests booked in Celebrity Solstice's new AquaClass category of accommodations, Blu is open for other guests on a space-available basis. The menu features savory appetizers such as roasted beet salad with goat cheese; Mediterranean chopped salad with pita chips and pomegranate vinaigrette; and entrees including blackened ahi tuna, pan-seared filet mignon, and herb-crusted rack of lamb.

Murano
A twist on the restaurant of the same name on Celebrity Century, and reflective of the specialty restaurants on the cruise line's Millennium-class fleet, Murano presents a blend of classic and modern Continental cuisine. The warm, elegant restaurant designed by BG Studios of New York features dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows, with romantic ocean views that pair beautifully with the fine Riedel stemware, exquisite bone china and gleaming silverware. The wine cellar offers options from around the world, with a focus on boutique-style and limited-production vintages. Appetizers include warm goat cheese pancakes with sweet bell pepper nage; salads include a combination of Maine lobster, white asparagus and black truffle lobster aioli; and entrees run the gamut from spice-roasted duck with raisin-apple compote to pan-seared turbot with Alaskan King crab ragout.

Bistro on Five
A variety of specialty crepes highlight the menu in this casually-chic location, where guests are welcome to take out selections, but the ocean views are likely to entice them to stay. Designed by Wilson Butler Associates, the venue's creperie is complemented with sandwiches, soups, salads, desserts and entrees including quiche, fish and chips, baked ziti and chicken pot pie nearly around-the-clock.

Café al Bacio & Gelateria
This upscale coffeehouse radiates all the energy of a popular European café, highlighted by a sophisticated gelateria serving authentic gelatos and Italian ices, as well as signature and specialty coffees, teas, fresh-baked pastries, chocolate truffles and petit fours.

AquaSpa Café
The AquaSpa Café is the perfect option for guests seeking quick, lighter fare. A signature venue introduced on Celebrity's Millennium-class fleet, and designed by RTKL, the soothing, airy setting invites guests to dine at comfortable tables while soaking up the tranquility of the Solarium, or enjoy their cuisine while nestled in the comfort of the lounge chairs.

Mast Grill & Bar
Comfort food is the focus of this ultra-casual, poolside venue, where the simple, fast and tasty options include burgers grilled to order, tacos, nachos, hot dogs, bratwurst, chicken wings, lamb gyros, Reuben sandwiches, and onion rings.

Oceanview Café and Grill
Embodying the casually chic atmosphere of a European marketplace, this Tihany-designed restaurant offers extensive menus with international flavors that change to reflect the regions in which the ship is sailing. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the venue offers plenty of outdoor seating for dining al fresco and soaking up the sun and sea air. Inside, during evening hours, a special section of the venue features tables draped with linen tablecloths for yet another casual dining option.

Cunard, New Ships, News

New York's iconic Statue of Liberty stood tall as a fitting backdrop for a Royal Rendezvous of Cunard Line's three luxury liners - Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth 2 and the new Queen Victoria, which made her maiden call to New York on January 13. Despite the freezing rain, thousands of maritime buffs lined the shores of lower Manhattan to see the regal fleet gather for the first and only time in New York. During a celebration that began with a whistle salute by each liner, the nautical royalty made a majestic procession through New York Harbor illuminated by a fireworks-filled sky as they departed on their respective voyages. It is the first time that three Cunard Queens have been in service simultaneously in the company's 168-year history.

Queen Victoria was launched on December 10, 2007, by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall (Camilla Parker Bowles) in Southampton, England. Following her celebratory maiden call to New York, she embarks on her Maiden World Cruise, a 105-day journey stopping in 37 ports in 23 countries, while Cunard's grand dame Queen Elizabeth 2 departs on her 26th and final World Cruise. Queen Mary 2 continues her winter sailings to the Caribbean.  And in less than three years  time, the line will take delivery of the new Queen Elizabeth, which will replace the venerable QE2 leaving the fleet later this year.

Cruise Planners provides value, service and expertise on all Cunard cruises

Cunard Line has ordered a new 92,000-ton liner, to be named Queen Elizabeth, scheduled to enter service in the autumn of 2010. Cunard has signed an agreement with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri for the construction of the new 2,092-passenger ocean liner, which will be built at Fincantieri's Monfalcone yard at an all-in cost of approximately $700 million. The vessel will be the second largest Cunard ship the company has ever built.

The decision  to add a third ship was made in response to both the strong bookings on the new Queen Victoria (due to debut in December, 2007) and to the departure of the much beloved Queen Elizabeth 2 from the Cunard fleet. The new Queen Elizabeth is being named after the original Queen Elizabeth liner, which sailed from 1940 to 1968.

In the Grand Cunard Tradition, Entertainment Aboard Queen Victoria will Strike a Visual High Note

Cunard, New Service, New Ships

As Queen Victoria prepares to enter service in December 2007, a team of 16 classically trained singers and dancers is already rehearsing four major theatrical productions that will form the core of the ocean liner's inaugural entertainment schedule.  From concept to curtain, Cunard will have spent nearly two years crafting sophisticated shows that engage guests with a striking balance of opulence and innovation.

"What Cunard presents is on a par with the highest calibre of world class productions," said Carol Marlow, president of Cunard Line, referencing the line's legacy of premium onboard entertainment.  "From the set décor and talent to the beautiful costumes by renowned theatrical designers, the work reflects a deep understanding of our guests' cultural intellect.  Our investment in entertainment is considerable and includes every aspect of the experience, from the sight lines in the theatre to the hand-selected creative team."

To ensure that the theatre venue is as extravagant as the shows themselves, painstaking detail went into designing the Royal Court Theatre, a three-tiered venue unsurpassed in form and function.  "We looked at several theatres and were inspired by the spectacular spaces designed by noted English theatrical architect Frank Matcham, whose dramatic multi-tiered spaces made him one of the most prolific theatrical architects of all time," said Coordinating Architect Giacomo Mortola.  "In every sense, the Royal Court Theatre captures that same feeling of grandeur and luxury."

Among the theatre's most distinguishing features is the collection of sixteen private boxes - the first-ever at sea - that frame the stage and afford 48 lucky guests exclusive seating from which to enjoy the performances.  Seating from two to eight guests each depending on the size, the boxes are furnished with graceful armchairs and cocktail tables.  Individual-sized Veuve Clicquot bottles and sweet or savory treats (depending on the show time) are served by white-gloved theatre ushers.  Following the performance, guests have an opportunity to meet the cast backstage.

The Royal Court Theatre is a visual tribute to Matcham's turn-of-the-century theatrical design works.  Known as the foremost theatre designer in the early 20th century, his vast output comprised more than 80 theatres and influenced theatre design throughout several decades.  His notable London landmarks include The Coliseum built in 1904 and now the home of the English National Opera, the London Palladium, Victoria Palace and Alhambra Theatre in Leicester Square.  "From the moment of arrival, guests will be awed by the sheer magnificence of the space," says Martin Lilly, Cunard's director of creative entertainment.  "The ambience is very much that of a 19th century theatre, with rich brocade fabric dressing the walls, a deep red velvet curtain, private boxes featuring an ornate frieze of gold leaf, and murals framing the walls above the stage.  It is everything the Cunard guest would expect."

According to Lilly, that expectation naturally extends to what's on stage.  "Because our guests are among the most sophisticated and well-traveled in the world, we are able to be bolder with our show concepts."

Shows as Spectacular as the Setting
Nowhere will the ship's Victorian era sensibility come more brilliantly to life than in Victoriana, a spectacular show that will take guests back in time to the apex of the British Empire, paying tribute to milestones of the era.  Victoriana captures Music Hall memories with splendid character performances, a touch of Victorian Gothic featuring contemporary choreography and period costumes.  After each Victoriana performance, guests carry the mood into the Queens Room for a jubilant Royal Victoriana themed ball.

Dance Passion celebrates the exuberant world of dance.  Outstanding international dancers execute superb and diverse choreography, capturing the magic of Gene Kelly, the sensual Argentine Tango, Salsa and Samba.  The show delivers the grace and elegance of classic dance to the vibrant energy of Swing and Jump Jive.

Cunard tapped Dmitri Iliukhin, choreographer and former Riverdance performer, to give Celtic Heartbeat an authentic resonance.  Featuring a mix of original and traditional Irish music, song and dance, it tells the story of a young Irishman and his search for fortune, capturing all the joy, conflict, humor, heartbreak and romance of his journey.  It features two principle dancers, four singers who take the role of the narrators, and a full dance ensemble.

The final production, A Stroke of Genius, pairs world-famous works of art with popular music.  This fresh and eclectic show features a blend of Andy Warhol and the Rolling Stones, Edward Hopper's American Realism and the music of Hoagy Carmichael, and ballerinas coming to life against a backdrop of Edgar Degas' French Impressionist paintings.

The productions are the work of the same team who produce acclaimed shows for sister ships Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth 2.  UK-based Belinda King Creative Productions works in tandem with Cunard to create "a voyage of light and sound, music and dance, with passion and soul, elegance and style," says King.

In addition to the production shows, Singers in Concert brings the combined orchestras of the Queens Room and Royal Court Theatre together for a concert-style show combining classic standards, contemporary songs and original musical arrangements.  An amusing and poignant musical presentation that light-heartedly explores the intriguing dynamics between men and women, the show features songs by Burt Bacharach, Billy Joel, James Taylor, Gilbert O'Sullivan and others.

About Queen Victoria
The 90,000-ton Queen Victoria will offer the very best of the heritage and traditions of Cunard Line, along with all modern day luxuries including some exciting innovations.  These will include the first traditional West End-style private boxes at sea in the Royal Court Theatre, the first Cunardia museum exhibit at sea, housing Cunard artifacts and memorabilia along with the first two-storey library at sea featuring an elegant spiral staircase.  The ship will also feature the line's celebrated Queens Grill and Princess Grill accommodations and dining, further enhanced on Queen Victoria with an exclusive deck terrace and an al fresco dining option.

From the outside, her distinctive black and red livery will hint at the sophistication that differentiates a Cunard liner.  This will be most evident in the ship's adherence to liner traditions of the past, with elegant public rooms, many on a grand scale, featuring rich wood paneling, intricate mosaics and gleaming chandeliers.  There will also be a grand, colonial-style conservatory complete with a retractable glass roof.

As well as being the second largest Cunarder ever built, Queen Victoria's arrival is particularly noteworthy as it will mark the first time that three Cunard Queens have been in service together in the company's 168-year history (she joins the world's grandest liner, Queen Mary 2 and the world's most famous and best-loved liner, QE2).

New Ships, Seabourn
Seabourn Cruise Line has announced that the debut of its new ship, the Seabourn Odyssey, will take place in Venice in 2009. Specific plans for the Odyssey's maiden voyage are expected to be announced by the end of this year.

Currently under construction at Italy's T. Mariotti shipyard, the 225-suite ship will cost $250 million, and will be the first addition to Seabourn's fleet in close to 20 years.

Due to the expected high level of initial demand, the line has devised a unique system for accepting reservations. Guests who wish to sail on voyages during the maiden year can secure a spot on a waitlist by making a standard Seabourn deposit of $1,000 per person, or $2,000 per person for the actual maiden voyage; deposits are being accepted now.

Once the itineraries are set, waitlisted persons will be notified in advance and given priority booking access, which will allow them to select the specific voyage and accommodations they prefer.

Reservations will be accepted according to the following criteria:

  • Guests who sail with Seabourn in 2007 or 2008 will have first priority.

  • Past guests of Seabourn who do not sail in 2007 or 2008 will be granted second priority.

  • Third priority will be granted to first-time Seabourn guests who have placed a deposit for the inaugural sailings.

Holland America, New Ships
Holland America Line will launch a 2,100-passenger ship in the fall of 2010. It will be a sister vessel to the 86,000-ton Eurodam, which will make its debut next summer.

The ship order was made by Holland America's parent company, Carnival Corp., with Italian shipyard Fincantieri, for an all-in cost of about $567.6 million.

The new vessel will have a 144-seat specialty restaurant, live music and entertainment facilities, outside-view glass elevators and a Greenhouse Spa and Salon.

Of the new ship’s 1,050 staterooms, 85% will offer an ocean view and 67% will have private verandas. All staterooms will have flat-panel TVs and DVD players.

The two new ships will be the largest in HAL's fleet, but CEO Stein Kruse said the ships would maintain the brand's commitment to midsized vessels.

"The addition of these two ships represent a 23% increase in our capacity over the 2008 through 2010 time period," Kruse said.
Cunard's Queen Victoria

Cunard, New Ships
Cunard's newest ocean liner, Queen Victoria, will feature interiors inspired by the well-recorded and history of previous Cunard ocean liners. From the ship's double and triple-height spaces-a design feature of grand liners of the past-to rooms imbued with an understated British charm, the overall effect is both contemporary and historically classic. "This will be a unique ship offering our guests a glorious taste of grand ocean liner travel from days gone by, along with every modern convenience. Even the most experienced travelers will be impressed. The ship demonstrates such extraordinary attention to detail, not only in craftsmanship but in the thought that has gone into exceeding our guests' expectations," said Carol Marlow, Cunard's president and managing director.

According to Teresa Anderson, vice president of interior design, "Much of Queen Victoria's interior design was inspired and carefully planned to take maximum advantage of the ship's grand spaces. Classical motifs, along with art deco and nouveau touches blend in a subtle continuity and add an element of surprise." The Grand Lobby will be the center of onboard activity and the core from which the ship's other public rooms flow. The Grand Lobby will feature a triple-height ceiling, sweeping staircase and sculpted balconies. A signature piece of artwork will anchor. An earth tone color palette of creamy beige, chestnut brown and gold is carried throughout, from light mahogany walls and circular hand-woven area rugs to intricately designed marble floors.

Off the Grand Lobby are the Cunardia museum display and the double-height Queens Room, designed to be reminiscent of a grand ballroom in a large country house with crystal chandeliers and the use of gold leaf. Specially commissioned murals by British artists reinforce the line's British heritage, as do the activities which will take place here, including afternoon tea, formal balls with a live orchestra, the traditional captain's cocktail parties, Cunard World Club events and even fencing classes. "This room's cantilevered balconies overlooking the ballroom are reminiscent of QE2, detailed with classically-ornate, curved railings," said Anderson. "The dance floor is hand-crafted of inlaid wood, inviting guests to enjoy the line's grand tradition of elegant ballroom dancing. The room's ceilings, light maple paneled walls and warmly backlit stained glass create a feeling of space and elegance." In contrast is Hemispheres, a circular room with a backlit perforated metal sphere encapsulated in decorative glazed screens. The room will have floor-to-ceiling windows and light mahogany wood paneling, leather-clad columns and metallic wall surfaces, executed in shades of dark blue, burgundy and gold. The circular dance floor is handcrafted wood and is highlighted by a chandelier. The 90,000-ton Queen Victoria will enter service in December. For more information,  call 866-912-7245.

Royal Caribbean Announces New Azamara Cruises

On May 4, Richard Fain introduced Royal Caribbean's new deluxe cruise brand--Azamara.

Speaking onboard the newly named Azamara Journey, the 710-person ship recently swapped from Pullmantur for the Celebrity Zenith, Fain  said that the company had intended to have the ships be upscale versions of the Celebrity product, but that during the ship's $19 million drydock refurbishment, they decided the vessel's redesign and onboard experience would put it in a category of its own. The Azamara Journey was originally the R6 from the now defunct Renaissance Line.

"Because this is a different product, and so distinct, it deserves a category name of its own to represent the fact that we're offering something different," said Fain. "We created Azamara to target an area of the market that we think is underserved, and that this product is suited to fill."

Deluxe, as he explained, is between premium and luxury. Prices will be above Celebrity's but below luxury cruise lines. Cruises aboard the Azamara Cruises line will have no formal nights.

Dan Hanrahan, president of Celebrity Cruise -- and now president of Azamara as well -- said that the deluxe category was created and chosen for Azamara to delineate the brand from others in the travel agent community.

The name Azamara comes form the Romance languages, with Aza meaning blue and Mara meaning sea. It will distinguish itself from Celebrity by offering destination-oriented itineraries in remote destinations that larger ships can't reach, with butler service in every stateroom, and more intensive shore excursion programs.

The christening ceremony for the newest addition to Princess' fleet, Royal Princess, has been re-scheduled for June 14 in the picturesque port of Portofino, Italy.  Originally to have been held in Santorini in a double naming ceremony with Emerald Princess on May 12, the event was changed out of respect for the tragic sinking of a Greek cruise ship in that location.

Royal Princess' relocated christening celebration will take place during the ship's first port of call on a voyage that begins in Rome the previous day.  Further details, including the announcement of the godmother, will be released shortly.

"Although we're saddened by the tragedy that prompted this change, we are pleased to name Royal Princess in a beautiful Mediterranean port that signifies the ship's visits to some of the most scenic ports in Europe," said Alan Buckelew, president of Princess Cruises.  "Portofino is a charming example of the type of the 'explorer' destinations we're able to highlight with this smaller vessel, and we're delighted to be able to christen our new ship in such a beautiful location."

A sister ship to the line's popular Tahitian Princess and Pacific Princess, the 30,200-ton Royal Princess offers passengers a boutique version of Princess' acclaimed onboard options -- including a variety of dining and entertainment choices and a large number of cabins with private balconies - all offered in intimate surroundings.   The 710-passenger vessel and her sisters have become popular choices for vacationers looking for a "off the beaten path" itineraries and a small-ship experience.

One of the Mediterranean's most picturesque towns, Portofino is known for its enchanting views and a lovely waterfront.  The quaint fishing village sports a dramatic natural harbor that has attracted sailing vessels for centuries.  Made famous by visits from royalty and Hollywood stars, the resort town became a favorite European travel destination in the 1950s, and today offers a secluded atmosphere, natural beauty and charming waterfront houses and cafes.

Portofino represents the many unique ports of call available on Royal Princess itineraries.  The christening voyage - a new "Mediterranean Collection" itinerary - features three of the four new ports debuting for Princess this season: Ravenna, Italy; Split Croatia; and Kotor, Montenegro.  Royal Princess also offers sailings that visit the ruins of Troy with a call at the new port of Canakkale, Turkey, as well destinations such as the Crimean coast, Egypt and the Holy Land.

Cruise Planners is a Commodore ranked travel agent with Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises has altered the dates and locations of the christening ceremonies for the Emerald Princess and the Royal Princess, which were to take place in Santorini, Greece, out of respect for the sinking of Louis Cruises' Sea Diamond off Santorini this month, Princess said.

Princess had been planning to name both ships in a single ceremony in Santorini on May 12.

The Emerald Princess will now be named on May 13 in Athens. The new date and location for the Royal Princess' christening will be announced shortly, Princess said.

The Sea Diamond scraped volcanic rock with its hull just outside Santorini's harbor and began taking on water; it sank April 6. The disaster apparently cost the lives of two passengers.

"Given the great shock and sadness this incident has caused, and out of the respect for those affected, we have decided that it would not be appropriate to continue with the celebrations we had planned in Santorini," said Alan Buckelew, Princess' president.

Buckelew said Princess will continue with the original plans to reunite a pair of TV mothers and daughters for the christening of Emerald Princess. Florence Henderson, best known as Carol Brady on "The Brady Bunch," and Marion Ross, aka Marion Cunningham of "Happy Days" fame and their TV daughters, Susan Olsen (Cindy Brady) and Erin Moran (Joanie Cunningham) will all be aboard Emerald Princess in Athens to officially welcome her into the Princess fleet. Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. exercised its option to build a second ship in its Genesis Project, the line said April 2.

Aker Yards in Finland will build the 5,400-guest, 220,000-ton ship with a projected delivery for August 2010, less than a year after the first Genesis prototype ship is due out, RCCL said. The ships would be the 23rd and 24th in the Royal Caribbean International fleet.

RCCL said it estimates the all-in cost of the ship to be approximately $1.4 billion. According to Aker Yards, the Genesis project ship will be 43% larger than the current largest ship in the world, Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas. The new ship will be longer than the Eiffel Tower and will weigh twelves times more!

Stay tuned for details about each of these exciting new ships!

New Luxury, Upscale Ships on Order

There was excitement at the recent Seatrade Cruise Shipping Convention, as several new shipbuilds were announced by luxury lines. These new ships are in addition to the recently announced orders that were placed by The Yachts of Seabourn.

Oceania Cruises, which currently has three ships in its fleet (former Renaissance ships) has ordered two new ships to be built by the Fincantieri Shipyard in Italy. They are expected to debut in the fall of 2010 and summer of 2011. Each will be 65,000 tons and will accommodate 1,260 passengers.  Although appreciably larger than Oceania's current vessels, the new ships will provide more space per person with staterooms that will be apprixomatly 50% larger than the current ones, as well as larger public spaces.

Silversea's new ship will be 36,000 tons and will accomodate 540 passengers. This will be the 5th ship in Silverseas fleet when it is delivered toward the end of 2009.

Seabourn's two new ships will each accomodate 450 passengers, more than doubling their current capacity if 634 berth. The new vessels will each be 32,000 GRT.

New Ships, Oceania Cruises
Oceania Cruises has entered into an agreement with Italian shipyard Fincantieri to build two 1,260-passenger, 65,000-ton ships, with an expected delivery in fall 2010 and summer 2011.

The new Oceania-class of vessels will cost $500 million each, or $400,000 per berth, at today's exchange rate. The agreement includes an option for a third vessel that would be delivered in 2012.

The order comes less than three weeks after Apollo Management, an equity firm, acquired a majority stake in Oceania for $850 million, fueling speculation that the order for these vessels was in the works long before the acquisition was finalized. Oceania has said recently that it is capacity constrained, and that it has already sold out most of 2007 and 70% of 2008.

The ships will be 80% larger than the line's current Regatta-class ships, and will feature six restaurants, including a pan-Asian eatery and a French-style bistro, all with open-seating and no surcharge. Ninety-three percent of the accommodations will have private balconies, and 96% will be oceanview. Staterooms will be 50% larger than the current ships' cabins, and attention will be paid particularly to state-of-the-art bathrooms. There will be two 2,500-square-foot Owner's Suites; six vista suites; 14 Oceania suites -- a new class -- measuring in at 1,000 square feet; 125 500-square-foot penthouse suites; 438 "bread and butter" 300 square-foot concierge-class cabins; and only 26 inside cabins.

For now the ships are expected to sail the same itineraries that Oceania currently does.
