Holland America Adding Upgrades to Five Ships
12/2/2008 1:50:31 PM Link |  | Add comment
Drydocks, Holland America

Holland America Line is adding a new resort-style pool area on the aft of the Lido deck on Statendam, Maasdam, Ryndam, Veendam and Rotterdam. The five ships are undergoing $200 million month-long dry-docks. The main focus of the new pool area will be a shallow area with 44 lounge chairs where guests can dip their toes in the water. Built-in benches are another place for dangling legs in the water. “The Retreat is a totally new approach for us to this area of the ship,” said Richard D. Meadows, executive vice president-marketing, sales and guest programs. “We’re creating an area where guests can relax outside in a sophisticated environment, and we’re adding other fun and convenient features such as a whirlpool, a band and DJ stand and even a pizzeria.”

The Retreat’s pool will be divided into three sections separated by low, curving walls running the length of the pool. The middle section is 16 inches deep so guests can sit on the built-in benches in the water. The two side sections feature lounge chairs in eight inches of water. Waterfalls and spouts enhance the décor. At the aft end of the pool will be a hot tub.

Slice, an upscale pizzeria, will be incorporated into the area, serving whole pies and slices to order. Tables and padded chairs under a sunscreen provide a place to dine al fresco. A stage will be added near the pool for live music. For added entertainment, an LED screen and sound system will be integrated into the ship’s superstructure.

The first dry-dock begins with the Veendam in spring 2009 and the last will be completed on the Maasdam in early 2011. While in dry-dock, ships will also get a new bar concept called Mix that features separate areas -- Martinis, Champagne and Spirits & Ales. Enhancements will be made to all existing staterooms and additional staterooms will be added. The ships will introduce 38 lanai staterooms (39 on Rotterdam) with direct access to the Lower Promenade Deck. New spa staterooms near the Greenhouse Spa and Salon will offer in-room spa amenities. Overall, Holland America Line has committed $525 million to its Signature of Excellence program. For more information, call 866-912-7245.

Cruise Lines Add Fuel Surcharges to Cruises

Due to the soaring cost of crude oil (as high as $98.62/barrel last week, a 42% rise since August), Several cruise lines have announced the addition of a fuel surcharge to the cost of a cruise.

The Carnival Lines (Carnival, Princess, Holland America, Costa, Seabourn and Cunard) have implemented a $5 per person per day surcharge on all cruises sailing on or after February 1, 2008. The surcharge applies to fist and second passengers per cabin, will not exceed $70 per person and applies to all bookings.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises announced a surcharge of  $7.50 per guest, per day, for all reservations that are not paid in full by Dec. 1, 2007. The surcharge applies to all sailings through 2008.

Oceania Cruises announced a $7 per person/per day fuel surcharge that applies to new and existing reservations that are not paid in full by Dec. 1 and is effective for all published sailings through April 2009.
and Silversea is assessing  a $10 fuel surcharge per person/per day effective on all new cruise bookings for 2008 voyages made on or after Nov. 14, 2007. The surcharge is applicable to all guests in the suite. Reservations made prior to that will be exempt from the surcharge. Cruise West will implement its $12 per person/per night fuel surcharge starting Dec. 7. The charge will be waived if the cruise is paid in full by that date.

Holland America, Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean International confirmed it will test open seating dining on the Freedom of the Seas from Oct. 14 to Dec. 16. The flexible dining will be offered in the Galileo dining room, located on the top of three tiers of the main restaurant. During the test period, open seating will be offered between 6 and 9 p.m. The other two levels will continue to offer two traditional seatings. Royal Caribbean's pilot program follows the announcement on July 16 that Holland America Line will add "As You Wish" open seating on one level of its two-tiered restaurants fleetwide. The move follows a test on the Noordam and will be expanded across the fleet over the next year. Like its sister company Princess Cruises, Holland America will still also offer two traditional seatings on the other restaurant level. Open seating will be 5:15 to 9 p.m. daily. For more information, call 866-912-7245.

Holland America Launches Kids and Teens Culinary Arts Program
6/19/2007 10:21:23 PM Link |  | Add comment
Holland America, New Service
Holland America Line has launched a kids and teen Culinary Arts Center activity program to bring the joys of cooking to the younger set.  Taking advantage of the fleet-wide million dollar show kitchens, the premium line now offers classes that teach kids and teens how to make dishes from breakfast to dinner.

“Learning about the culinary arts and cooking isn’t just for adults,” said Richard D. Meadows, executive
vice president, marketing, sales and guest programs.   “We’ve developed some fun recipes and classes so that kids, tweens and teens can discover more about cooking from our shipboard chefs.”

The program, which launches this summer, incorporates dishes from breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks in complimentary classes lasting 45 minutes each.  All kids, tweens and teens are welcome to attend whether or not they are registered for the Club HAL and teens program.

The preparations range from simple to teen sophisticate.  Kids under eight years old will learn to make Bear Tracks (Alaska theme cookies), Fruit Leather (fruit roll-ups), Ice Cream Sandwiches, Salad People Art, and Denali Peaks (Alaska Theme Scones).   Kids eight and over will delight in making Soft Pretzels, Granola Bars, Pita Chips and Hummus, and Saltwater Taffy.
Class topics and times will be communicated through daily programs and Club HAL programs during a cruise.  Teens are welcome to attend adult culinary demonstrations, too.

As a part of the line’s $225 million Signature of Excellence initiative, Holland America Line spent more than $13 million to create and install the Culinary Arts Center presented by Food & Wine magazine, which is offered on every sailing of its 13 ship fleet. The Culinary Arts Centers features the only fleetwide dedicated state-of-the-art show kitchens at sea, each resembling the elaborate kitchens used by celebrated chefs on television cooking programs.  Innovative theater-styled venues offer large overhead plasma video screens providing close-up views of food preparation, and a large cooking display counter where guests can learn new techniques and recipes.  More than 60 top chefs, wine experts and cookbook authors will sail in each year, and classes and demonstrations will be offered on every sailing.
Holland America Orders Sister to Eurodam

Holland America, New Ships
Holland America Line will launch a 2,100-passenger ship in the fall of 2010. It will be a sister vessel to the 86,000-ton Eurodam, which will make its debut next summer.

The ship order was made by Holland America's parent company, Carnival Corp., with Italian shipyard Fincantieri, for an all-in cost of about $567.6 million.

The new vessel will have a 144-seat specialty restaurant, live music and entertainment facilities, outside-view glass elevators and a Greenhouse Spa and Salon.

Of the new ship’s 1,050 staterooms, 85% will offer an ocean view and 67% will have private verandas. All staterooms will have flat-panel TVs and DVD players.

The two new ships will be the largest in HAL's fleet, but CEO Stein Kruse said the ships would maintain the brand's commitment to midsized vessels.

"The addition of these two ships represent a 23% increase in our capacity over the 2008 through 2010 time period," Kruse said.
Holland America Completes Westerdam Signature of Excellence Improvements

Holland America, ship enhancements

Holland America Line's Westerdam has unveiled new staterooms, more shopping, a larger Pinnacle Grill and Bar, and a new Explorations Café at the top of the ship in a portion of the Crow's Nest on Observation Deck. The improvements are part of the premium line's Signature of Excellence program. The first wave of innovative Signature of Excellence fleet-wide enhancements, which cost more than $225 million, was completed at the end of 2006. "At Holland America Line, we continually evaluate how to make our product even more relevant to today's cruiser. This ongoing commitment to quality and innovation is our Signature of Excellence," said President Stein Kruse. "These new concepts and venues on the Westerdam will be extended to the Eurodam upon its launch in June 2008 and to the Vista-class Oosterdam in 2008 and Zuiderdam in 2009."

Work on the Westerdam was completed a day earlier than expected at Fincantieri Palermo Shipyard in Italy. Located in the Crow's Nest, the new Explorations Café, powered by The New York Times, provides views while guests surf the Internet Center, read a book, listen to music, sip a specialty coffee or enjoy a pastry. The Pinnacle Grill alternative restaurant on Lower Promenade Deck was expanded to accommodate 136 guests. A new Pinnacle Bar separate from the restaurant was created. On the Promenade Deck, the former location of the Internet Center now features additional shopping areas and a small coffee bar. The Holland America Line Signature Shops have been expanded and a new high-end verandah jewelry store, the Merabella -- which was first introduced on the Amsterdam -- has been added. The guest capacity of Westerdam also has increased with the addition of 34 and inside cabins on the aft Upper Verandah, Rotterdam and Navigation decks. The new staterooms, complete with signature amenities such as flat-panel TVs and plush Euro-top Mariner's Dream Beds, give Westerdam a guest capacity of 1,916.

Holland America Launches New Sea Water 'Scrubber' Aboard the Zaandam

Environmental News, Holland America, News
Holland America Line has taken a step to make its ships "green," with the debut of an onboard sea water scrubber system aboard the Zaandam. This project is designed to demonstrate the feasibility of using sea water to "scrub," or reduce engine emissions on oceangoing vessels.

The Zaandam left from Vancouver on April 22 (Earth Day) on a 19-day itinerary that will visit Hawaii after undergoing a two-week drydock during which the technology was installed on the ship, the first cruise ship in the industry to be fitted with the system, according to HAL.

"This is a ship like no other in the cruise industry," said Stein Kruse, president and CEO of HAL. "After studies and modifications of the ship's new test emissions technology, it could dramatically change not only the cruise industry but the entire maritime industry by reducing ship engine emissions."

The scrubber uses seawater to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions from diesel exhaust and significantly reduces particulate matter emissions, HAL said. The sea water is then treated to remove harmful components. So far, it hasn't been adapted for large vessels, the cruise line added.

HAL said that it launched the project in cooperation with several U.S. and Canadian government and regulatory agencies at a cost of more than $1.5 million, of which $300,000 was paid for by an Environmental Protection Agency/West Coast Collaborative grant and $100,000 by the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency.

"This project shows how Holland America Line focuses on new technologies and best practices to bolster our existing award-winning environmental programs," said Kruse. "We will continue to go above and beyond international requirements, as we have for many years, now in the operation of our vessels."

Five Carnival Brands to Participate in "On Deck for the Cure"

Carnival, Costa, Holland America, News, Princess, Seabourn

Five Carnival Corp. brands will now participate in "On Deck for the Cure," a fundraising initiative that benefits the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation, an organization that raises money for breast cancer research.

Jack Anderson, Carnival Corp.'s vice president of marketing, made the announcement at last week's Cruise 3Sixty conference, and said the program will be modeled on one launched by Holland America Line ships last year.

HAL raised $400,000 for Susan G. Komen for the Cure last year, exceeding its original goal of $250,000, through guest participation in on-deck fundraisers. Richard Meadows, executive vice president of marketing and sales for HAL, presented representatives from Komen for the Cure with the check for $400,000 March 30.

Carnival Cruise Lines, Seabourn Cruise Line, Costa Cruises and Princess Cruises have joined forces with HAL with a common goal to raise $1 million for breast cancer research.

The On Deck for the Cure fundraising program will be modeled after the launch program, which started aboard Holland America cruises where guests can make a donation of $15 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure and participate in a 5-kilometer walk around the deck.

Carnival, Costa and Princess will host 5K walks, with varying donations to participate, as well as concurrent events. Seabourn, which doesn't have the deck space to offer a 5k walk, will instead conduct a "Quiz for the Cure" trivia contest.
